Topic: Building a computer

I'm building my own computer and I was wondering what a good CPU cooler would be for overclocking. I've been looking at the Big Typhoon from Thermaltake but its 15cm high and thats the space I have between the mobo and the side of the case is 15cm so I'm afraid it won't work. Any ideas ?

Icy's probably one of the best people to ask about this sort of stuff.

Actaully, if you can get hold of Crash, he builds and buys PC's/etcetera for a living. (Or something like that). So he'll be a good one to ask too.

As for ideas ... Could you trim the plastic off of the Big Typhoon? Or would that invalidate the warranty? Heh.

Ask Crash or Icy, would be the best option.

Alright guys smile

The stock cooler for the core2 duo is pretty decent and quiet. If you can try to put a 120mm case fan on the intake vents inside the front of the case(sucking air in) and a couple of 80 mm fans on the back of the inside of the case (blowing out of the back), This will give you a nice airflow through the case and the CPU fan will not have to work as hard.

If you can post a couple of piccies of the inside of the case i could be more specific.

Cheers.

Theres four 80mm fans in it and i'll probably get 2 more for it.

Nice case dude - to me the airflow looks fine on it. Possible only problem (and it's not a big one) is the fan at the front may be somewhat blocked... Crash will be able to give more insight there.
If you really want to go for a nice shiny new heatsink and fan go for an Arctic Cooling Freezer 7 Pro - it's a very good piece of kit and its small enough to fit inside your case. Follow the link for a look-see Microdirect - Zalman Cooling

The arctic freezer pro would definitely fit in that case. The front fans are ok where they are and there is a good couple of fans on the back. I think thats enough airflow through the case. With the arctic cooling aswell, it should be a nice and cool machine.

Thanks Crash. I have one more question to ask, I'm going to buy one of these graphics cards but I don't know which is better, they are the Sapphire X1950PRO 512MB or the XFX Geforce 8600GT 512MB ?

Well my computer is finished and I chose the X1950PRO and it seems to be a decent card. Spent all evening getting everything installed onto it but I think I have everything set up properly on it.

Nice! U not gonna overclock ur RAM tho? As a minor point what clock speed is the RAM and can it deal with the bigger FSB that's recently on the market? If so then ur machine will be flying! big_smile

I was thinking of overclocking the RAM. Its suppose to be easy to overclock, its crucial ballistx PC2-6400 ram. I might give it a go later but I'm downloading COD4 at the moment to see how the computer performs on the latest games.

Well guys, I'm back !!!!!!!! tongue

Been real busy with school and my leaving exams which are now over thank god !! My new 360 probably didn't help either !!

Sorry for being so inactive. Also managed to fix my BF2 problem but its still crashing sad

Anyways as a little bonus to myself I've just spent €900 on a new system. Should be coming tomorrow. Watercooling, XFX 780i, XFX 8800GT etc, etc.

Great to be back guys !!

That 900 isn't including CPU, hard drive or RAM as I'm taking them from my previous setup.

When do you hope to have it done ?
